Abstract: The ever-growing demand for data consumption over the Internet has fueled the development of several different technologies in the last decades, such as single-mode fibers and erbium doped fiber amplifiers. Space division multiplexing (SDM) is currently under development as the next technological leap to ensure that the optical networks will be able to keep transporting the continuously growing data in the future. A major component of SDM are multi-core fibers (MCFs) and few-mode fibers (FMFs). In this talk I will discuss how MCFs can be used to reliably transport high-dimensional photonic spatial quantum states over long distances, thus enabling new protocols in quantum information. We will also discuss the natural ability of these fibers to connect remote integrated quantum photonic circuits, and how interferometric optical sensors can be built using these fibers.
