The Einstein Telescope Project and Beyond: Science and Technology for Future Gravitational Wave Detectors

Join us at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm for a two day meeting on the science and technology that will shape future gravitational wave science and technology. The meeting is co-organised by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Embassy of Italy in Sweden, with programme contributions from researchers and institutional representatives from KTH, Chalmers University of Technology, Stockholm University, Nordita, Gran Sasso Science Institute, Trento University, the University of Camerino, University of Birmingham, INAF, INFN, INGV, RISE, Vetanskapsrådet together with the Einstein Telescope and LGWA communities.

The meeting will take place on 4–5 May 2026 at KTH. Day 1 is scheduled in room 4204 at Albanovägen 29, and Day 2 in Gradängsalen at Teknikringen 1. All times are Europe/Stockholm time.

The Einstein Telescope  is a proposed underground third-generation gravitational-wave observatory. The official ET site describes the project as combining 10 km interferometers with cryogenic optics, quantum technologies, and environmental noise-mitigation measures to achieve major sensitivity gains beyond current detectors. This meeting is intended to connect that long-term vision with the enabling science and technology being developed today, while also engaging complementary low-frequency initiatives such as the Lunar Gravitational Wave Antenna (LGWA).

The event is designed to connect researchers working across controls, quantum optics, photonics, commissioning, machine learning, and fundamental physics, with the goal of accelerating technology paths directly relevant to ET and related low frequency GW efforts. By combining invited talks, contributed lightning pitches, and workshop-style discussion, the programme is built to surface concrete technical challenges and strengthen links between Swedish universities and institutions, agencies and industry with Italian and European partners. The scientific topics include quantum optics and squeezing, photonics, detector commissioning, machine learning for control, Einstein Telescope and gravitational wave detector controls, and low frequency GW concepts including LGWA.
