Title: Mathematical models and computational science
Abstract: We give an introduction to mathematical models and computational science used in a number of scientific domains, including neural networks to model the brain and partial differential equations to model the mechanics of cells and the blood flow in the heart. Computer simulation based on such models relies of the solution of large systems of equations with millions of degrees of freedom that demand sophisticated algorithms and supercomputing capabilities. Furthermore, the integration of simulation and data poses new challenges and offers opportunities. We give examples from projects at the department of Computational Science and Technology at KTH, including patient-specific computer simulation of the human heart based on ultrasound measurements.
