SUNRISE and Solstice: towards a sustainable nuclear energy future in Sweden

Abstract:
SUNRISE (Sustainable Nuclear Energy Research In Sweden) is a research centre established at KTH to take the first step towards building a lead-cooled research and demonstration reactor in Sweden. Such reactors can pave the way for sustainable electricity and heat production with fourth generation nuclear power. The centre is focused on reactor and component design, safety analysis and materials development and qualification. In the greater context of working towards a novel research reactor, the second step is to commission, build and operate a large scale electrically heated demonstration and qualification facility in Oskarshamn. This is the main goal of the recently funded Solstice project. The main partners are KTH, Luleå University of Technology, Uppsala University, Uniper, Blykalla, Westinghouse and Sandvik, as well as a large collection of other companies and international university partners. SUNRISE is funded by the Swedish Strategic Research Foundation and Solstice by the Energy Agency. In this seminar, I will give an overview of the context and the technology, and discuss the research and development plans.
