Goal

The project aim is to develop a new technique for fast detection of circulating tumour cells (CTC) in blood samples. Prospective tumour cells will be isolated, counted and identified based on detection of protein markers and transcripts. A single-chip approach will be used with microfluidic handling of single cells and a multiple parallel readout of a set of nanowires functionalised with different receptors.

 Research Focus

  • Nanowire technology aiming towards extreme sensitivity - single biomolecule detection?

  • Single-cell droplet microfluidics – could a few CTC:s (out of ~108 cells in a blood sample) be delivered with a high yield one by one to the nanowire array?

  • Functionalisation schemes – how would each nanowire be functionalised differently?

  • Biomarkers – which proteins/transcripts should be used for identification of a specific cancer?
