Abstract: Optical parametric frequency conversion based on quasi phase matching (QPM) in nonlinear optical crystals is a powerful technique for generating coherent radiation in wavelength ranges spanning from the mid-infrared (mid-IR) to the blue, displaying low thermal load and high efficiency. This thesis shows how QPM in one- or two- dimensional lattices can be employed to engineer novel devices for parametric downconversion in the IR, affording freedom in designing both spectral and angular properties of the parametric output. Abstract: Miniaturization, on-chip integration, and mass fabrication of optical instruments are key enabling steps for future real-world applications in communication, sensing, biomedicine, space, etc.  Besides DNA analysis in an optofluidic chip as well as Raman spectroscopy and in vivo optical coherence tomography on a silicon chip, our work has focused on dielectric waveguide amplifiers and lasers.  We achieved a rare-earth-ion-doped waveguide amplifier with 1000 dB/cm net gain, exceeding previous reports by two orders of magnitude and making it comparable to the best results reported in semiconductor optical amplifiers, while allowing high-speed amplification.  Fundamental-mode channel waveguide lasers with slope efficiencies up to 85% were obtained, reaching the absolute theoretical limit of the investigated laser system.  A dual-wavelength, distributed-feedback, dielectric waveguide laser on a silicon chip was realized and applied to intra-laser-cavity (ILC) nano-particle sensing.  On a recently secured ERC Advanced Grant, the laser’s ultra-narrow linewidths and ultra-high quality factors, resulting in intra-cavity powers of hundreds of Watts and light-measurand interaction lengths exceeding the circumference of the earth, will be exploited to perform ILC sensing of nano-sized bio-particles in optofluidic chips, first-ever demonstrations of on-chip ILC trace-gas detection and Raman spectroscopy, as well as ILC rare-earth-ion and energy-transfer spectroscopy approaching the single-ion level.

Abstract: The novel dilute-nitride material system Ga(NAsP) can  be grown lattice-matched to (001) Si-substrate. The incorporation of N in the Ga(NAsP)-material allows for a significant reduction in the lattice constant, which leads on one side to a dislocation free deposition on Si. On the other side the specific conduction band formation process in these materials is used to realize a direct band gap semiconductor. By applying a variety of physical investigation techniques the high crystalline quality as well as the direct band gap character of the novel Ga(NAsP)-material system have been verified. Ga(NAsP)/(BGa)(AsP)-MQWH were grown on exact oriented (001) Si substrates embedded in thick (BGa)P separate confinement hetero-layers by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The incorporation of B into GaP and Ga(AsP) allows for a precise strain management of the whole III/V laser stack towards the lattice constant of Si. The optoelectronic properties and first lasing characteristics of Ga(NAsP)-MQWH on (001) Si-substrate will be presented and discussed.

These results form the basis for a unique realization of  monolithic integration of III/V-based optoelectronic and Si-microelectronic functionalities in the near future. The challenges of this integration concept will be discussed and possible solutions will be presented.

Abstract: How small a laser can be practically realized? – it is not a curiosity question any more in view of perceived future requirements of all-optical signal processing in communications, quantum computing. This is the question asked at the forefront of the photonics research. In this talk, the search for the smallest possible laser over the last three decades will be reviewed. The evolution of resonant cavities from the 1-D vertical cavity surface emitting laser to the 2-D photonic crystal laser and back to the 1-D ladder-type nano-beam laser will be discussed with biased historical perspectives. Detailed emphases will be placed on recent 1-D nanobeam lasers.

The objective of this thesis was to develop applications of monolithic fiber devices and actively controlled fibers. A special twin-core fiber known as a ‘Gemini’ fiber was used to construct equal arm-length fiber interferometers, impervious to temperature and mechanical perturbations. A broadband add/drop multiplexer was constructed by inscribing fiber Bragg gratings in the arms of a Gemini Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A broadband interferometric nanosecond switch was constructed from a micro-structured Gemini fiber with incorporated metal electrodes. Additionally, a Michelson fiber interferometer was built from an asymmetric twin-core fiber and used as a high-temperature sensor. While the device could be readily used to measure temperatures below 300 °C, an annealing process was required to extend the range up to 700 °C. The work included development, construction and evaluation of the components along with numerical simulations to estimate their behaviors and to understand the underlying processes. The thesis also explored the use of electrically controlled fibers for filtering in the microwave domain. An ultra-narrow phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating inscribed in a fiber with internal electrodes was used as a scanning filter to measure modulation frequencies applied to an optical carrier. A similar grating was used inside a dual-wavelength fiber laser cavity, to generated tunable microwave beat frequencies. The studied monolithic fiber interferometers and actively controlled fibers provide excellent building blocks in such varied field as in microwave photonics, telecommunications, sensors, and high-speed switching, and will allow for further applications in the future.

Abstract: The recent upsurge in research activities on plasmonics within optics and photonics lies in the fact that noble metallic nanostructures can exhibit leveraged and tailorable electromagnetic responses to light, via the so-called free-electron plasmon oscillations. This seminar will shed light on the physical origin behind such extraordinary light-matter interactions. Several important applications of plasmonics, including light localization beyond  diffraction limit and negative-index media, will be pinpointed. A more concrete example on how plasmonic nanostructures can give rise to artificial colors as a result of their super absorptive nature will be presented, accompanied by real-life samples directly out of Electrum lab.

Abstract: The reduction of the thermal conductivity in low dimensional materials has been associated with two principal effects, namely, the modification of the acoustic dispersion relation due to the spatial confinement of the phonon modes and the shortening of the phonon mean free path due to the diffuse scattering of phonons at the boundaries of the membranes. We have studied acoustic phonon confinement experimentally and theoretically: The dispersion relation curves have been measured and phase velocities of the modes determined. A reduction of the phase and group velocities of the fundamental flexural mode by more than 1 order of magnitude compared to bulk values have been observed. We have measured the lifetime of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in these membranes using the ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling. The decay time of the first-order dilatational mode was seen to decrease significantly from ∼ 4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from ∼ 194 to 8 nm. We compare the experimental results with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity parameter. Our combined results provide an insight into the limits of nanomechanical resonators and specially thermal transport in nanostructures. The latter will be discussed in the context of these phonon studies.
