Applied Physics Cell Culture and Bioimaging Facilities

The facilities are located at AlbaNova, KTH.

Cell Culture

The cell culture laboratory is fully equipped for culturing of various cell lines and primary cell cultures. The equipment includes:

  • Two Galaxy cell incubators (37°C, 5% CO2)
  • Two laminar air flow (LAF) hoods
  • Centrifuge for cell precipitation
  • Eppendorf centrifuge for sample preparation
  • VACUSIP vacuum aspiration system
  • Water bath equipment (37°C and 25-70°C)
  • Microscope for cell observation and counting (equipped with a fluorescent lamp)
  • Refrigerator/freezer for storage of cell culture media and media components
  • -70°C freezer
  • Liquid nitrogen tank for storage of the cells

Bioimaging

The Bioimaging lab is equipped for both live and fixed cell observation, as well as imaging of various non-biological samples. The lab was started in 2003 after a generous funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. The equipment includes:

  • Zeiss LSM 510 Pascal - inverted confocal laser scanning microscope (LSM):
    • two channels
    • 488, 543, 633 nm lasers
    • ZEN imaging software
    • climate chamber (CO2 and temperature regulated)
    • 10x – 63x objectives
  • Refrigerator/freezer for storage of the samples
  • Equipment for preparation and handling of solutions

Much more confocal microscopy equipment is avilable at the Cell Physics site at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). Superresolution microscopy, including STED, SIM, PALM/STORM, is available at the Advanced Light Microscopy (ALM) facilities  at SciLifeLab, which is a national facility, open for applicants from all over Sweden.
