Abstract:

A long-standing debate in physics has been whether or not there exist any theory that is more complete than quantum mechanics in describing microscopic systems. The debate is almost as old as the quantum theory itself, but in 2015 three experiments put an end to the discussion. All three experiments showed that a more complete theory cannot exist, provided that any signal from one system to another cannot propagate faster than the speed of light. In the talk, we will look at the discussion itself, how the results from the experiments could end the discussion, and how the experiments were designed. At the end of the talk we will look at some applications of these results.
