Abstract: In the investigation of crimes it is often crucial to learn as much as possible from evidence found at the crime scene. Some of the most frequently used forensic methods, such as DNA, fingerprints, trace evidence and drug analysis will be presented. Future directions that are under development will be described, in particular how digital tools and digital forensics become more and more important. The mathematics around evidence valuation and how it connects to the legal process will be outlined.
